What is zari?

Zari is the metallic thread used to create the rich borders, pallus, motifs and decorative designs that are characteristic of many Kanjivaram sarees.

The appearance of zari can be similar across different sarees, but the underlying material and value can be very different.

This is why two sarees that look almost identical can have very different prices.

When comparing sarees, don't look only at how bright or golden the zari appears.

Ask what the zari is actually made of and whether it carries any precious-metal value.

Pure Zari: The heirloom choice

Pure Zari sits at the premium end of Kanjivaram sarees.

For customers who are looking for an heirloom saree, Pure Zari is particularly significant because the zari carries precious-metal value.

This is also one of the reasons Pure Zari sarees command a substantially higher price than sarees using tested or imitation zari.

Resale value

One of the biggest differences between Pure Zari and other zari types is that Pure Zari can retain resale value because of its precious-metal content.

That doesn't mean that every Pure Zari saree will necessarily sell for its original purchase price. The actual resale value depends on factors such as the prevailing metal value, the quantity of zari and the condition of the saree.

But unlike imitation zari, the precious-metal component gives Pure Zari an underlying value beyond the saree itself.

For customers buying a saree to pass down through generations, this makes Pure Zari a natural choice.

2G Zari: Rich appearance without precious-metal resale value

2G Zari is another popular choice for Kanjivaram silk sarees.

It allows customers to enjoy the rich appearance of zari at a more accessible price than Pure Zari.

However, there is an important distinction that buyers should understand.

Does 2G Zari have resale value?

No.

The gold value in 2G Zari is only very small and is not significant enough to provide meaningful zari resale value.

Therefore, a customer should choose a 2G saree because they love its colour, design, finish and overall appearance — not because they expect to recover precious-metal value from the zari later.

What about “1G Zari”?

Don't make that assumption.

In the market, the term can be used for zari that is actually tested or imitation zari without meaningful precious-metal value.

The name itself should therefore not be treated as proof of gold content or resale value.

The question you should ask

If a seller describes a saree as 1G Zari, ask:

“Will this zari fetch any value if I sell it later?”

That simple question can tell you far more than the name “1G”.

If the answer is no, then you should evaluate the saree based on its design, finish and price, rather than assuming that you are buying gold value.

Silk Fast, German Silver, HF and other zari names

You may also come across terms such as:

• Silk Fast
• German Silver
• Half Fine (HF)
• And other market-specific zari names

These fall into the category of tested or imitation zari without precious-metal value.

They can still produce beautiful finishes and are available at different price points.

The price difference between these varieties can come from their finish, appearance and overall quality, but a higher price does not automatically mean that the zari contains precious metal.

So when comparing two sarees, don't assume that a different zari name automatically means a different amount of gold.

Why do some zari sarees turn black over time?

This is another question customers frequently have.

Pure Zari and 2G Zari can undergo oxidation and darken over time.

Other tested or imitation zari varieties generally take longer to show this effect.
