Pure Zari vs 2G Zari Kanjivaram Sarees – What’s the Difference?
Pure Zari vs 2G Zari Kanjivaram Sarees – What Should You Know?
When buying a Kanjivaram silk saree, customers often come across terms such as Pure Zari, 2G Zari, Half Fine zari (HF), Silk Fast & German Silver zari. Understanding the difference is important, especially when choosing a saree for a wedding, bridal trousseau or a special occasion.
At Salammal Silks, Kanchipuram, we believe the type of silk and zari used in a saree should be clearly explained to the customer.
What is Pure Zari?
Pure Zari is traditionally used in premium Kanjivaram silk sarees. The zari contains precious metals and therefore has an intrinsic material value in addition to its craftsmanship.
At Salammal Silks, sarees sold as Pure Zari Kanjivaram Sarees come with the applicable Tamil Nadu Government Zari Test Certificate, giving customers documented information about the zari used in the saree.
Our pure silk sarees also come with Silk Mark certification where applicable, providing assurance regarding the authenticity of the silk.
What is 2G Zari?
2G Zari is different from Pure Zari.
It can create the rich zari appearance associated with traditional Kanjivaram sarees while making the saree available at a considerably more accessible price than a comparable Pure Zari saree.
However, customers should understand that 2G Zari should not be considered equivalent to Pure Zari.
2G Zari sarees do not come with the Tamil Nadu Government Zari Test Certificate provided with our Pure Zari sarees, and the zari should not be considered to have the precious-metal resale value associated with genuine Pure Zari.
A saree can still be woven using pure silk while using 2G Zari. Where applicable, our pure silk 2G Zari sarees come with Silk Mark certification for the silk.
Pure Zari vs 2G Zari – Which Should You Choose?
The right choice depends on what you value in the saree.
Pure Zari Kanjivaram sarees are particularly suitable for customers looking for traditional bridal or heirloom sarees and who value genuine zari containing precious metals.
2G Zari Kanjivaram sarees can be an excellent choice for customers who want the appearance and craftsmanship of a Kanjivaram silk saree at a more accessible price and do not require the precious-metal value associated with Pure Zari.
Neither should be confused with the other. The important thing is that the customer knows which type of zari is being purchased.
Why Zari Disclosure Matters
The appearance of zari alone may not tell a customer whether it is Pure Zari or another type of zari.
For this reason, customers should look beyond terms such as “pure silk” when purchasing a Kanjivaram saree. Silk purity and zari type are two separate characteristics.
A saree can be made from pure silk without necessarily being woven with Pure Zari.
At Salammal Silks, we clearly distinguish our Pure Zari and 2G Zari collections so customers can make an informed choice.
